Knuckle Up – Double Cup 5

Last Saturday I took a small trip to attend Knuckle Up’s Double Cup 5 at New Caney’s Speedsportz Racing Park. Watching the most beautiful drift cars I’ve ever seen get in laps really was an “actually, you can have your cake and eat it too” moment.

For the uninitiated, Knuckle Up is a Texas drift series where part of the cost of entry is having a pretty car. Not just asking for the (often unmet) low bar of please have bumpers and a coherent paint job, but for real bro, make your drift car stylish. Let me tell you, it was an absolute case of whiplash after two weekends of muddy carnage at the HPA test track.

The Double Cup in the name of the event signifies that competition portion (sponsored by Koyo) are actually tandem team runs. Two hot drift machines at a time sending it fender to door to show who’s really about that life.

Teams came in from all over the country and it had me kind of star struck in a way. Really not trying to fanboy, but I was regularly saying “oh shit, I know them from Instagram/YouTube!”.

Even better, it brought out old friends I hadn’t seen in years.

Unfortunately (EXCUSES TIME) I got a lil bit of food poisoning (I’m not saying it was the gas station burrito one of the homies gave me, but I’m not ruling it out) and had to sit out Sunday, but I threw together a little gallery of track shots from Saturday. Stay tuned for a follow up post of stuff I shot walking around the pits. I decided it’d be cute to dust off my EOS 630 and burn a few rolls, but I have yet to get that developed.
